Hands Only CPRHealthcare and school care (1)
Heart rescue that can only save lives. Too often, people who go into cardiac arrest at home, at work, or in a public place die because they did not immediately receive CPR from someone on the scene. As a spectator, they encourage you not to be afraid. Your actions can really make a difference.

When you or someone else on the scene calls 911, you will also be asked for your location. Try to be specific, especially if you are calling from a mobile phone that is not linked to a landline. Remember that answering the sender's question in detail will not delay the arrival of help.

Beginning with the 2018-19 school year, Assembly Bill (AB) 1719 requires school districts and charter schools that have a high school health course to provide instruction only in performing compression cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). This law does not apply to school districts or charters that do not have a health course requirement. CPR is an important life-saving technique that is useful in many emergency situations, including a heart attack or near-drowning, where a person's breathing or heartbeat has stopped.

The training program chosen should be based on evidence-based National Emergency Cardiovascular Care guidelines for performing compression-only CPR. The American Red Cross is an example of an organization that provides these guidelines. Use the link above for more information about CPR and copies of letters distributed to families, teachers and counselors. These letters provide more details about educational requirements and questions for school districts.

AB 1719 also calls for school districts and charter schools to provide their students with general information about the use and importance of an automated external defibrillator (AED). Finally, AB 1719 further states that any person or organization that supports or supervises the teaching of compression-only CPR students or the use of an AED is not liable under the law for civil damages, absent gross negligence or willful misconduct. This protection enables effective learning and teaching without fear of liability.

Hands-only or compression-only CPR is CPR without mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. It is an easy-to-learn CPR method that has been shown to be as effective as conventional CPR and less frightening to bystanders to perform in an emergency. Information is provided on requirements, guidelines and training for school districts.
